The history of the Holdeners can be traced back to the 13th century, when they participated in the wars for Swiss Independence against the Habsburg Empire (it has been rumored that Holdeners were involved in the signing of the Federal Charter, or Bundesbrief, by the three forest states or Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden in 1291.)
All Holdeners around the world are Helvetians, and have ancesters that founded the Eidgenossenschaft, or confederation. The genealogy, however, can only be traced back to the end of the 16th/beginning of the 17th century. Our oldest sources indicate that the Holdeners come from four different branches, and we do not, as of yet, have any knowledge of a common ancestor for these branches.
The goal of this site is to obtain and present the most complete and accurate information possible about the Holdeners around the world. This is the official Holdener Internet site featuring news and history for the Holdener family, as well as genealogy information (fact sheets, pedigrees, and pictures) dating back to the early 1600s.
There are many surnames other than "Holdener" contained in our database that are currently being researched. The Database Surnames page contains a complete listing of surnames related to the Holdeners and is also a good starting point for viewing any individual information for a given person.
Why participate in Holdener.com? For starters, so a resource is available that we can all refer to when looking up family histories, and find out about our past, present, and future. This resource is sorely needed, because even though there is a good amount of information on our family, it is floating around in many places across the globe -- a central location would be helpful. We especially need all the information out there on the newer generations of Holdeners around the world.
This site is constantly evolving as new genealogical information is discovered. We strongly encourage you to e-mail the site administrator with any information you have about your particular Holdener line, especially if it is not fully or accurately covered within the pages of this site.
We would like to see as much information as possible. All we ask is that any information provided be accompanied with sources, where applicable. Unfortunately, there will always be people out there providing false, inaccurate, or private information to the site. Chances are we will recognize any problems and we won't accept it.
We ask that you submit information only that you have rights to. Information on family members that is private and that has not been approved is unacceptable.
